I sought refuge today from my personal challenges, turning to my TV for escape. Being a history buff, I tuned to CNN’s series on the 60s. It was a wrenching experience. First was a recount of the idiocy of the war-mongering politicians that drew us into the Vietnam War and then seemed unable to extricate us when needed. So much death, and for what? Next was the recount of the difficulty and huge sacrifices made by so many to bring civil rights and voting rights to our black community. (Many thanks to Shelley Berkeley for introducing me to John Lewis!) From the perspective of recent history and current news, it’s clear we still have a long, long way to go. And just as clearly, it’s hard to deny we haven’t made all that much progress as a nation. Race-based hate speech is still alive and well. The stupidity that America must impose its will on the world through military might is still alive and well. The notion that the states and local sheriffs somehow are the best arbiters and enforcers of social justice was a big theme for the bigots then and seems to be a popular conservative theme again. My heart is heavy.
