I spent 4 hours on an Amtrak train the other day and there is something about trains that is special not only to me but to so many Americans. Gliding along the backsides of so many familiar roads and towns seeing the view from the other side of the rivers, swamps, forests and farm fields through a region I have traveled countless times by road. Even seeing the more dismal side of our decaying post industrial towns as the train trundles by the crumbling factories and mills is an experience that shouldnt be missed. I was amazed at how many people were out photographing the train as we passed the remote rural crossings , at bridges and overpasses and in the depot. My first train rides were hopping freight trains when I was young and I must say that I prefer the comforts of Amtrak over the amenities found in a box car. Although one of the most incredible sunrises I have ever seen was from the doorway of a box car as it came up over Mt Shasta in California. I wish the US would put more thought into revamping our own infrastructure and make trains as much a part of our future and not a just a dying symbol of our legacy as an innovative nation
