I spent Friday morning at the New Open World (NOW) Academy - TopicsExpress

I spent Friday morning at the New Open World (NOW) Academy talking to the kids, because the kids love me. NOW Academy is one of the six schools on the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools campus, located on the former site of the famed downtown Los Angeles landmark, The Ambassador Hotel. Its named after Senator Robert F. Kennedy because he was assassinated in the Ambassador kitchen. Seems a little creepy to me to name the site after him, but whatever. I was invited by my friend Dr. Laurie Walters, a teacher and co-founder of the NOW Academy, to the elementary schools career day to tell the students about the exciting opportunities in cartooning. I didnt bring up the fact that with print newspapers and magazines shutting down nationwide, the cartooning profession may well be obsolete by the end of the decade; I mainly spent the time drawing cartoons and telling them what a cool job cartooning is. I spoke to three classes; at the beginning of each class, I asked who likes to draw (most hands went up) and who is a troublemaker (about a half-dozen hands went up). I explained that liking to draw + troublemaker = cartoonist. I had a fun time, and I think the kids did, too. And I got a certificate of appreciation and a bagel! Thanks, Laurie!
