I spent a lot of time in the Carnegie Library. Up the creaky - TopicsExpress

I spent a lot of time in the Carnegie Library. Up the creaky stairs, past the poster of The 7 Warning Signs of Cancer and through the door to encounter two little old ladies, a rubber stamp for the dates, cards in boxes...it was charming and awesome for a small boy. I read Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, Landmark Books, Sherlock, and on. And Id sit on the floor and look at the stereoscopic pictures. Fast forward thirty years: Im in BT on a motorcycle pilgrimage, visiting the library. I engage the current librarian, explaining that the only visible changes are the new fluorescent lights and the Formica on the service counter. I then pointed out where all the above stuff was, and she leaned over the counter when I said Tom Swift and whispered, Theyre for sale downstairs. I bought a symbolic one and brought it home; still have it. Its a treasure.
