I spent all my time during a Nile cruise on the upper deck. The scenery often changed dramatically. It was often verdant and dotted with little family farms. But in the south, near Aswan, it was often utterly barren, like this. I felt more at home in the green places, but I found the area around Aswan more sublime. Ancient Egyptians sharply contrasted these two landscapes, and felt that the former is where civilization and divine order reside. But some of their books of the afterlife portray the soul going through rough landscapes like this until they could be re-energized. It was sublime to experience how the Nile shaped ancient Egyptian views of life and death.
