I spent more than 2 years in Gujrat .And in Ahmedabad .I think i am qualified to speak about it not only because i was a resident (and not a tourist ),and was exposed to it in all forms and seasons .I found it to be the best city to live in from among the cities where i worked (Jaipur ,Bhopal ,Dehradun,Lucknow ) simply because i did not have to worry about the fear of either a communal riots or my wife being kidnapped or teased .The police is efficient and on the move all the time .The food is excellent and very reasonably priced .I ate the best sizzlers and the best fish i have had the opportunity of eating anywhere else in India (and yes that includes Goa !!).It has beautiful architecture and one can go on a heritage walk around the old city .It has a beautiful waterfront and the crowd is trendy .There are no beggars on the streets .I think much of the above has something to do with the administration of the city. The CM is very accessible -one can actually get him on his cell phone .But it is a one man show-which is not a good thing because governance must be based on systems rather than individuals .And make no mistake about it -it has corrupt officials and things move faster if you grease the palms .With all my contacts ,my passport took a long time in coming because i refused to do anything like bribing at the passport office or the police verification Thana.!!I waited !!It has the most chaotic traffic in the world and no one obeys traffic lights -i dont know why .!!.But when you go to work or when you go for a weekend to Rajkot ,Bhuj ,or Jamnagar ,and come back dog tired ,you need good roads to travel on ,electricity so that your airconditioners are working ,and water so that you can have a bath under a shower with a powerful gush of water .!!All that one has in Ahmedabad and all other towns i visited in Gujrat .I am not too sure of the villages .Whether the credit goes to Modi or not is for you to decide .One thing which everyone talks about is his unimpeachable honesty .Which is something very rare in a Indian politician .!And i ahd the opportunity to talk to bureaucrats ,police officers ,businessmen ,local politicians ,labourers, petty shopkeepers ,vegetable vendors and many more .
