I spent some time this afternoon stuck on a muddy road in Kidepo Valley, not because of the mud but because the elephants on the road ahead refused to yield. The driver turned around to go back, and discovered that other elephants had moved onto the road in the other direction, and they also refused to yield. There were more than a hundred elephants in the area. The aggressive ones were threatening the car with trumpeting, bluffing charges, and trunks held high in the air. In the end we had to go about a mile off road to get out of the area. I recently had the idea that elephants should be introduced as wild animals in North America, to replace the ancient mammoths. That might need some re-thinking.
