I spent the day in Camp Djabal attending a formation session of the APE (the Association of Parents with Children in School) and speaking with a couple of youth who live here now after fleeing from Darfur. I talked with them for some time about their thoughts on the conflict there ten years later, about the resistance to education reforms in Djabal, about the concept of silence and consent, about the economic, political, and social importance of learning English for Sudanese and for Africans, about how Education=Unity and a future for a Sudan with equality, about how conflicts in the camp are mirroring conflicts in Darfur, and how the refugee youth are breaking with old patterns of thinking. Today was the first day that I felt I live here.
