I spent the morning looking over the Common Core plan for math in grades 6 through 12. Math has been identified as one of many courses that showcase student-tracking. We can trace entry into four year colleges based on a student’s ability to successfully complete Algebra in the 8th grade. The implications of the new direction are fascinating for student groups that historically underperform and there will be surely be a fight with certain parent groups that will no longer be able to place their students into geometry as 9th graders. I love the thinking behind the plan, but the computer based testing model is a real concern for me. Especially when considering how some of our schools are deeply under resourced with the technology necessary to execute a computer based test for hundreds of students. As a Commissioner there are larger structural issues I want to address around student achievement, community engagement, and more support for our educators. Solving the challenges around this rollout is a huge priority for me as well. I hope the good people of SF elect me, I really want to get to work.
