I started this project in March after deliberating over a similar concept for the past 5-6 years. I set myself a very ambitious target of 5,000 followers by the end of the year. We’re not even officially at the end of the year yet and already, we have nearly 27,000 people who are part of the Humans of Newtown community. Words cannot describe how truly overwhelmed I am by this. There are times I found it so overwhelming I almost stopped the project but various meetings with people and feedback I received, inspired me to continue. I could write so much about what I’ve learnt and I am so humbled that complete strangers are willing to share their stories with me. I remember each and every one of them as each has had an impact on me - as do lots of the comments and responses the posts receive. But I would like to share extracts from two lovely messages I received this week. I get these from time to time in my inbox and it is the greatest honour to receive them. It reminds me of why I do what I do. From Georgia: “I love what you do for HON. I mean every day we walk by these people thinking we have it bad but then we all have our stories, our struggles & our happiness that if only we could all share and hug it out.” And from Monique: “Thank you so much for giving me the privilege of sharing my story and taking my photo! I really truly appreciate your kindness and support - I feel so lucky to have met you today. You inspired me as well, showing me what you do and how amazing Humans of Newtown is. My story is what makes me who I am today, and Im so glad I can inspire others who have had their fair share of pain and hardship - all I want to do is show others that we can get through this, we are all strong, amazing people and we have the power to overcome anything - all we need is a helping hand. The comments everyone made brought me to tears. I cannot believe how wonderfully kind people are and how many of them took the time to write something. It was so beautiful to see so many people making the effort to show their support.” I don’t get paid to do this HON project but the best ‘payment’ I get is when people ‘get’ the overall objective of HON. I hope that by understanding a little bit about other and celebrating our differences, we become a more accepting, understanding and compassionate community that wants to connect with each other more. ‘For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s love and concern for each other.’ Just sayin....
