I started watching Russian Ark on Netflix this weekend. In small bits, because I have a bad cold and also slept a lot. It brings up a lot of interesting questions: Does anything really change (the flow of different centuries in the galleries of the Hermitage)? What does it mean to have a national culture, versus adopting the values of other cultures (such as the critique that Russians are adopting European values instead of having a Russian art of its own)? And thus, what does it mean to create a uniquely American culture? The whole movie was shot in one take; imagine the logistical challenges of that! I like how, in the beginning of the movie, the woman in the white dress is pointed out specifically by one of the other characters. And then she is a type of anchor for the rest of the film (what Ive seen so far). My grandmother was born in St Petersburg and spend her childhood there, before the Revolution. Id really like to go visit it, and the Hermitage, especially.
