I started watching, was disturbed, and almost shut this off. I am so glad I didnt. This is a rare visual narrative about gender relations and female self-concept. A woman is shown publically pleasing men in scripted, stereotypical ways that leave her privately isolated, unknown, and sorrowful. She is seen, and treated—both by herself and men—as a commodity. No one sees beneath the mask and costume. Transformation occurs when a man glimpses her authentic self and invites it to come out, into community. When she takes that risk, she discovers joy in being real in relation to men—in being recognized, valued and respected for her authenticity and true expression of self. Pairing this song with that story is curiously effective. India Arie absolutely nails it; I have never loved her more. Yo Yo Ma is, of course, brilliant. I recommend setting the video quality to the highest setting your computer can take and watching this full screen. LYRICS I look at you all See the love there thats sleeping While my guitar gently weeps I look at the floor And I see it needs sweeping Still my guitar gently weeps I dont know why nobody told you How to unfold your love I dont know how someone controlled you They bought and so-old you I look at the world And I notice its turning While my guitar gently weeps (With) every mistake We must surely be learning Still my guitar gently weeps I dont know how you were diverted You were perverted too I dont know how you were inverted No-one alerted you I look at you all See the love there thats sleeping While my guitar gently weeps Look at you all Still my guitar gently weeps youtu.be/L-5M1_DKvb0
