I started wondering whether God was listening to us pathetic folks in Oceanside or maybe pursuing his own incomprehensible plan. I still puzzle on that sometimes. I wonder if God ever regrets giving us free will when He sees us choosing to do these horrible things on our own. Maybe He should be more like Marty the cop: tell us when to stop and then hit us with a headache stick when we ignore Him. Once, shortly after the war began and before Skeeter got hurt, he and I had sat at the base of the lighthouse, our backs propped against its cold brick side. I asked him about the truthfulness of these things. I asked why God’s will allows such evilness. Skeeter said he thought God wasn’t “willing” anything to happen at all. “If everything’s put down to God’s will, Joey, then it’s like He’s conducting some kind of orchestra, and men have no free will to speak of. We’re not responsible for anything we do, or anything that happens because we do it. That’s too damn easy, Joey,” he said. “You can’t believe in both free will and God’s will, taking personal credit for your fortunes while blaming your misfortunes on an Almighty power. It’s too convenient to try and have it both ways.” Skeeter put a lot of faith in the free will stuff, willing to let it spin in a frenzy. For me, it seemed to cause trouble, and I’d rather have no part of it. AUTHOR’S NOTE—The conundrum of Free Will versus God’s Will versus the vagaries of Fate runs throughout the novel as Joey Joaneda struggles to find a suitable solution. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
