I stayed up late last night watching the Royals defeat the Orioles - TopicsExpress

I stayed up late last night watching the Royals defeat the Orioles in extra innings. The Royals are an amazing story--they are now 5-0 in the playoffs, winning four of the games in extra innings. But the perseverance of the Baltimore fans impressed me even more than the game they were watching. It was cold in Baltimore last night, with temperatures in the 50s and a steady rain from the sixth inning on. Yet the fans stayed in their seats, huddled against the miserable conditions. The players resolve was expected--playing in the rain is part of their job. But the fans commitment to their team was both voluntary and passionate. I thought about the Sunday mornings as a pastor when I wondered if rain would make for smaller crowds in worship. And remembered the Sundays I went to church because it was my job more than my passion. Beware of those who preach only because it is Sunday, a wise professor once said. Its easier to be a professional playing in the rain than a fan who chooses to sit through it and cheer. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus could have fled from the soldiers and retreated to safety. He chose instead to die for me because he loves me. Will I serve him for the same reason today?
