I still can appreciate American Girl . . . their stories continue to send the message that girls can use their own unique talents to solve problems that matter to them. I also love that they offer little girls of color and little girls with wheelchairs the option of having dolls that look like them. It’s sad to see the history aspect of American Girl fading away, though, because it gave such powerful context to the whole Create your own Girl of Today! idea. I’d argue that seeing yourself represented in history is even more empowering than seeing yourself represented in a doll.* Grade school history classes gave me about thirty seconds a month on Abigail Adams or Pocahontas or Harriet Tubman. With American Girl, I had thirty books to remind me that girls built America, too. *Opinion expressed by fair-skinned, blonde girl with no disabilities who had the opportunity to actually get bored with dolls who looked like her. Privilege checked.
