I stopped in Hurley this morning on my way to Silver City at that tunnel that separates the workers in the shanty town on the north sides of the track from the store and the movie theatre the only places they can spend there script they were paid in. I stood at the gate that they locked when the workers got uppity so they couldnt access the things they worked for. I imagined the woman and children pressed together begging the mine bosses to open the tunnel. Im sitting here in the historic Steelworkers hall in Bayard. Where that famous scene in Salt of the Earth when the woman of the town said they would hold the line. And were defending another employer driven de cert union busting vote. Why do we scare them ? Because without us they get to do what ever they want. No one to speak truth to power. No one to watch your back. Picked off alone because without a union we dont stand together. Sometimes these de certs win. But always workers lose. No one not ever 5 or 10 years down the road says were better off without the union . Never
