I stopped reading SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN years ago, once it became evident that much of what that journal published was simply opinion journalism (note the use of a term of art). This is a particularly bad example. Bad? Yes, bad, as in bad education or bad writing. What I mean by that is that it isnt even good (read: thoughtful or informative) opinion journalism. Good opinion journalism uses clever rhetoric to persuade. No one would find this opinion journalism piece persuasive. It is an exemplar of a lesser form of of that genre, which is only intended to preach to the choir (read: a polemic intended to do nothing more than reiterate what the believer already believes). It is interesting that the author seems to be unaware of the fact that a given term might have a number of meanings, some jargon and some colloquial. There is nothing of further interest to be found in this particular example of opinion journalism.
