I stopped watching the news shortly after the 2012 elections, so when my daughter had an assignment for debate class to argue whether or not to put troops on the ground in Syria, I had no idea what the political situation was. Luckily, I have friends like Barry Crimmins, a political satirist, and Jim Naureckas, editor at Fairness and Accuracy in Reportings Extra! magazine. So they kindly sent their assessments of the situation so I could talk to her about it. Anna combined their info with other research to come up with these points. Best of all, she was able to see war for what it was, the medias role in it, and she learned that most news organizations are owned by large corporations, some of which financially benefit from wars. It was the best feeling to see the light bulb turn on as she tied it together, and is learning at an early age that the news is biased. Thank you Jim and Barry! She got an A!
