I strongly suspect that this is true not only of the UK - Swedish teachers appear to have similar complaints. It comes down to this, I suspect: We will just have to trust the professionals, i.e. trust the teachers. Sometimes, our trust will be disappointed, the power that comes with being trusted will be abused, and some children will fare badly. But that still strikes me as better than a situation in which all children seem to fare rather badly all the time because their teachers are exposed to a regime of supervision and fear. So, reducing supervision and control in schools - all schools, including the universities - must be the way forward. This just cant go on for much longer.
