I stumbled across this lesson from Texas Blues Alley. Theres not a lick in it but it NAILS the essence/differences between two iconic guitar players (one of which I knew) & pure lick for lick guitar player purists. Do cover tunes HAVE to be played?? Absolutely, but theres always a choice between being yourself or being a CD lick player. Its the difference between a good guitar player & a great one. I heard Stevie say many times that he didnt understand people wanting to copy him lick for lick when he rarely,if ever, played the same thing twice live himself. I watched him learn Albert King licks note for note but he quickly moved passed that in becoming himself. In the back of his mind,if he ever wanted or tried to be a lick for lick player, it was when he was younger trying to learn how his BROTHER played their heroes licks. He also moved passed that while still holding Jimmy in the highest esteem. Stevie COULD play Jimmy Vaughn. Its debatable if Jimmy could play Stevie. I seriously doubt if Jimmy ever felt the need to try. Stevie loved his audiences but he wasnt about trying to impress them with his technique, He was about doing that with his soul. Thats the difference between become who you are as a guitar player & or who you wished you were. The music business is hard & cruel but, if one is to TRULY leave a mark, its essential to sign,on the dotted line,.........with ones OWN pen. Evidently Jimi Hendrix understood these differences as well. ;) ♪♫♪♫
