I stumbled upon a street called Broadway in downtown Los Angeles - TopicsExpress

I stumbled upon a street called Broadway in downtown Los Angeles tonight, noticing about a dozen old marquees, and signs saying Broadway Theater District. This made me really curious about the history of this area, so I went to wikipedia... There was a time, long ago, when the streets of downtown Los Angeles were awash in neon—thanks to a confluence of movie theaters the world had never seen before. Dozens of theaters screened Hollywoods latest fare, played host to star-studded premieres and were filled nightly with thousands of moviegoers. In those days, before World War II, downtown L.A. was the movie capital of the world. This is amazing and really sad at the same time. To think that an area with such a vibrant history, one that is still integral to Los Angeles very existence, is dying. Maybe Im a hopeless romantic, or maybe Ive just been in New York lately, but its crazy to think that LA used to have a vibrant downtown, and now downtown is largely a shit hole (with a few exceptions).
