I support and encourage school systems everywhere to become better prepared to recognize and work with mentally ill students. I personally worked for 18 years as a teacher in public and private schools and 4 years as a mental health professional working with severely mentally ill persons who live in the community. I have suggested to several administrators that work in the Lynchburg Public Schools to utilize the services of a former director and nurse with over 40 years of combined experiences in the Mental Health field to help educate teachers and administrators to recognize signs and behaviors of mentally ill students. This training would be beneficial in recognizing the behaviors in young people in the early stages of schizophrenia which usually begins in the early to late teens for many boys and sometimes girls. The behaviors of these students may often be dismissed a teenager behavior, drug abuse or denial by the students, administrators, teachers and parents. There are very strict confidentially law in place to protect the mentally ill. If the school systems, parents and members of society do not take steps to improve our current procedures will there be more VA. Tech, Columbine, and Newtown occurrences? Would we be so fortunate to have a person on hand with the capabilities of Antoinette Tuff ?
