I support the view by some political parties that the church can play a significant role in advancing and strenthening the reconciliation project in South Africa. The church, through the South African Council of Churches, contributed immensely in the struggle against Apartheid, particularly in the 80s. Today, some are using Marx blindly in context to discredit the value of the church in Society. They have forgotten that Marxism as a tool of analysis, is flexible and can be altered to better respond to the issues and conditions of the day. Anybody, who calls himself a Marxist, and has rendered the church useless and irrelevant on the basis that Marx said religion is the opiate of the masses acts as a contributory element to why we will never realise the objectives of the National Democratic Revolution. We need to rid our decision-making bodies of people who blindly follow ideas. The value of the church has been undermined for too long, it is time our religious leaders took responsibility. For as long as they continue to be complacent, we will not continue to struggle.
