I suppose I need to say this. And, I suppose some of you may - TopicsExpress

I suppose I need to say this. And, I suppose some of you may disagree with me. But, I have to tell you how disappointed I am with our City Commission. Mind you, I am a big supporter of Safe Harbor and everything that the organization has done over the past decade to provide services for our homeless population. I am also a fan of North Star Soccer, and I loved the idea of the former location of my beloved Boys and Girls Club being used, once again, to serve kids. That is my opinion. I think the recreation center would fit in nicely with the proposed revitalization of the 8th street corridor. And, obviously, I am disappointed that the Commission failed to even look at the proposal from North Star for the Wellington Property. This is not the first time this Commission has failed to look at the entire picture. Although I like the current splash pad, I was not a fan of removing the Sprit of Traverse City. And, since the beginning of its conception, the splash pad has been fraught with errors. I was also baffled by the moratorium on festivals. Surely, you remember this? Festival Fatigue? And, now...the woes of Wellington. As I have said, I love Safe Harbor, and I support the idea of a permanent emergency shelter. However, I do not think this particular property should be used as an emergency shelter. I do not think it is fair to call Boardman Neighborhood residents who didnt support this idea “hateful and spiteful.” Im looking at you, Mr. Carruthers. The reality is this: The City is supported by the tax payers. The property owned by the City is really owned by the tax payers. The residents in the neighborhood, both residential and commercial, should be heard. All proposals for use of City property should be reviewed. And furthermore, the notion that residents may be concerned about the recreation center because of young men loitering in alleys is absolutely absurd. Think about the things you say before you say them, Ms. Easterday.
