I suppose Im supposed to say Happy Veterans Day. Nope, cant do it. It would be disingenuous of me to us a word like happy to describe a day celebrating the fact that men and women were sent overseas to fight unjust wars for bullshit reasons (Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan) and were lucky enough to come back alive, put a bumper sticker on my car saying I support the troops, but act like the way our military treats its veterans is perfectly alright. Especially on a holiday that marks the anniversary of the end of World War I - probably one of the biggest and most pointless wastes of human life in history. If anyones seen Paths of Glory, its hands down the best anti-war film Ive ever seen. Its about a general putting three soldiers on trial for cowardice, the penalty for which is death by firing squad. The fact that in World War I, generals actually did this only hammers the point home. Medals are no defense here. Probably one of the coldest lines ever uttered on film, when the soldiers defense counsel requests to point out his clients were honored with medals for bravery. Yes, I can be thankful that people made it back home alive, but Im even more sorry they had to go in the first place.
