I suppose that when most of us watch this video, were struck by how like us these monkeys are. And wed probably never even dream of using their bodies for food or their skins for clothing. Id bet that most of us would balk at the idea of restraining them, imprisoning them, forcing them to breed so that we could do the same to their offspring, killing them to satisfy a moment of pleasure. Because theyre like us. We defend our exploitation of other animals with morally nonsensical justifications about their physical differences, their cognitive abilities, their linguistic capacity, their weakness or vulnerability, our might, our history, our traditions, our habits. None of these arbitrary reasons can excuse us from the immense and relentless harm were causing to others, and most of us speak out when we see them used as justifications for harming humans. As long as we use difference as an excuse to take whatever we can from someone else, we will never find peace. Its time to stop thinking of other species as resources. Nonhuman animals are here for their own purposes, they have a sense of themselves and the world around them; thats all that matters. And because of this, we need to respect their most fundamental right not to be used.
