I suspect Im like many of you who have been contribution opinions to this forum, or at least watching others do it--and that similarity is that youre looking forward to the election finally being concluded. Diversity of opinion is healthy, because its in that tension of views that were better able to see the issues broken down into pros and cons so that we may weigh our own views and come to a conclusion. Youve heard, or seen others say, that you cant complain if you dont vote. Thats partly true, but only represents the lowest threshold of civil responsibility. Taken as a lone truth, it suggest that once you vote, you can get back to complaining... Thats not really the case, and thats obviously not what is generally intended, or expected, in a democratic society. The general idea is that a democratic society is a conglomeration of people who share a common bond, and its that common bond which holds them together and forms the rationale for why they would all go in the same direction after a vote is taken. Opposite to this dynamic is one where people take up camps of opposing views, lob them at other camps, and hope that eventually they will prevail. This describes the nature of war and exists when there is little or no common bond...or the bond that used to exist is forgotten or erodes. Based on what many have repeatedly stated here, I think its clear that we all love and value Costa Mesa. Its also clear that there are different ideas about what makes it special, but in general, its that desire to be here that is our common bond. So when the voters have their say by the end of the day, we should all be willing to move together in that direction, whatever it is, and its incumbent on the leaders to not seek the spoils of war, but the unity of populous. Criticism is a lazy mans tool for change...we all know that, and that why voting followed by criticism is not productive. What is productive is to accept the majority decision, and support the outcome. Does that mean forgetting what your priorities and desire are...no. Does that mean you were wrong...no. Does that mean you have to stop talking about the change you wanted...no. It does mean though that rather than digging in and become intransigent is a signal that you are not capable of accepting the democratic process. Am I totally right with the above view...no, and given the history of this forum, I suspect some of you will be quick to point that out...and thats fair. But I hope that many of you resonate with the need to be constructive with the outcomes of todays election, whatever they might be. The true power of the democracy is not that we get to vote, but that we work together AFTER the vote to actually make things better based on that vote.
