I swear, Florida is rubbing off on me. Unfortunately, my wife, Jean, has been having quite a bit of back and neck pain this past week and my Thumper back massager broke about six months ago. Having gone way over my budget for Christmas, I didn’t want to add a couple more hundred bucks for another massager. I spent several hours researching massagers and reading Amazon reviews on them this afternoon. Every massager has many positive comments followed by the poor folks who got the lemons that broke down after one or two uses. There doesn’t seem to be a single unit out there that doesn’t suffer some kind of quality control problem. This one guy said in a review don’t waste your money on them, they are all cheap these days and don’t last. He recommended using an Orbital Polisher for waxing/polishing automobiles. My first reaction was, “What kind of idiot would use an Orbital Polisher on his wife?” Then, I thought about it a bit... The idea of the car polisher began to look good. Good orbital polishers don’t just run a pad in a circle, they move back and forth to prevent swirling in the paint. That is a very natural massage action. I may not have a massager but I do have a high end Porter orbital polisher that only gets used about once a year. I told my wife that the idea made sense and she was willing to give it a try, anything to help with the pain. I just finished our first session with the polisher and I must admit it really did a great job, even though it was a learning experience for both of us. A word of caution for others wanting to try this. There is a reason the best back massagers peak out at about 4,500 rpm. The polisher goes up to about 6,500 and is fully capable of removing clothing at that speed. The polisher did a great job. With practice I was able to get close to the spinal column at the neck and exert just enough pressure to provide the relief she was looking for. If she needed warmth, I just left it in place for 20-30 seconds. Again do this at lower speeds. High speed would probably have left a smoking hole in her. Overall, we fully recommend folks give this a try as an alternative to expensive massagers. I would also recommend a nice clean pad, as well. Mine still had some wax on it from the last car polishing. My wife has a lovely shine and I am sure water will bead on her should she get caught in one of our Florida thunderstorms. At least she has no swirling. ;-)
