I teach special education at Nielson.... working mainly with the 4th and 5th graders. I have been there 10 years (!!!) after teaching one year at Cooke. Over the years, I have been blessed with supplies from our amazing and generous PTO and a principal and colleagues who share resources and supplies even though I am not a regular ed teacher. ♡ This is one of those requests that I felt was my responsibility...so I was planning to purchase them one at a time once the strike was over. Obviously, things have changed.... I have stewed for a whole day over whether or not I should post this request here. It isnt something I cant live without. It isnt in the school supplies category. I decided to go ahead and post it after talking it over with a few friends who are teachers and administrators in other districts. They reminded me that nothing ventured = nothing gained. If nothing else, I will put this project on the shelf (pun totally intended) until next year. I know there are teachers who NEED things in order to get the year started. **Those should obviously be filled first!** Sooo, I am hoping to get rid of the shelves that hang just over the kids heads in my room. They are often bumping into them, and I have to arrange desks or tables a certain way to avoid the taller kids sitting by that wall. My room is actually a former office, so there isnt a ton of space. I think the room is 9 or 10 feet wide. Anyway, in a search for ways to get rid of the wall storage, I found this idea. It will give me hidden storage and also function as seating. This will make more efficient use of my already limited floor space. I wont need as many chairs cluttering up the space. I plan to eventually invest in some rectangular whiteboard tables that can serve as desks at this bench. With this floor plan, they could all face my SMART Board during instruction, and there would be more space for me to move from student to student without weaving between desks and chairs. The photo shows shelves from IKEA turned into benches with storage underneath. Walmart has something similar. I think they could also be made fairly easily... but the wood would need to be something that will hold up...and that could get pricey. I am not asking someone to go out and buy me these...they arent cheap. I was thinking maybe someone out there had one they dont use anymore or maybe you could keep your eyes open at sales and auctions. Maybe someone has a great hookup/discount at IKEA or Walmart.... or maybe some other site or store that sells something similar. Thanks for all you are doing for teachers. It makes me so happy to see my colleagues getting their requests filled....a pencil sharpener really does get us *that* excited!
