I teach the majority of the Speech (Oral Communications) classes on my campus, even though Im technically in the English Department. I love it, and I learn so much every semester from my students. I am heartened by the number of persuasive speeches Ive heard over the last month in favor of gay marriage. I work really hard not to a) bring my politics into the classroom, and b) influence the topics the students pick in any way. Essentially, nothing is off limits. These speeches have come from students young and old, male and female. They care so deeply about the world around them. Its just wonderful, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it.
