I tell you, its working! Weve been thinking in terms of establishing another musicians hang-out. You know, like Dontes, Carmelos, a few other clubs along the way. Well, I think it might be working. Im talking about the Desert Rose in Los Feliz. Last night, a full house. Full, largely, of musicians. Several invited to sit in. From out of town, there was Clay Jenkins, (from New York, on trumpet), Denny Christianson (from Tornonto, on trumpet), Jim Argirno, (from Massachusetts, on piano), and L.A.s own Bernie Dresell on drums. Frequently several singers come in to join in, including Janie Mann, Sylvia Brooks, Deborah Shulman, and Loree Frazier, to name a few. The only down-side is its a small room compared to the ones mentioned above. Theres an outside are, which is large, but the inside, where the band plays, is only about 9 tables plus the bar. The up-side is theres no cover or minimum. Musicians dont usually spend a lot, often just drinks, but its good food, and an excellent staff. And the fans are getting plentiful. Although the next time Ill be there (because of other commitments) will be January 24, the Trio plays there every Saturday night 7-11 PM. John Altman (saxophone, UK) will be guesting on 2 Saturdays during the month. In short, check it out. Photos included of the regulars: Mark Z. Stevens (our fearless leader), Jon Mayer (piano) and Harvey Newmark (bass)
