I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Mark 10:15 NIV Yesterday we looked at the characteristic of children. As Jesus continued his welcoming of the children, He made an interesting statement. Anyone who doesnt receive the Kingdom like a child, will never receive it. You cant get to Heaven unless you become like a child. I feel like Nicodemus who asked Jesus, what, can a man enter his mothers womb again?. All my life people have been telling me to grow up and now Jesus says that if I want to receive eternal life, I must grow down. I must become child-like. What Jesus is saying here is not that we should be immature. He is saying that we should be innocent in our approach to Him. No, we cant explain how God could raise a dead person to life, and could save a sinner like me by simply believing in Him and accepting Him. We cant explain how He can mend a broken heart any more than we can explain how He created the heavens and the earth in six literal days. But, we accept it, because God said so, and by so doing, we are being like a little child who believes his or her father and mother, just because thats who they are. I am convinced that the reason the Bible says to remember our Creator in the days of our youth is because intelligence and maturity is often a stumbling block to faith. Once we begin to think we know it all, we have such a hard time accepting the simplicity of the gospel of Christ. And, yet, that is what is required for salvation. We have to realize that it is not of ourselves, it is a gift of God. We cant earn it, we cant buy it, we cant be born into it. We have to be born again into it. If you are having a hard time accepting this, why dont you ask a child?
