I thank Secretary Chuck Hagel for his service to the United States, and admire his climbing the ranks from an enlisted soldier to the top of the Department of Defense. He made difficult decisions during his tenure as Defense Secretary, including the targeting of ISIS and other terrorist groups, and the implementation of ill-conceived budget cuts due to sequestration. I appreciate his lifetime of dedication to the American people and wish him well in the future. The President must select a new Secretary of Defense who shares the view that ISIS poses a grave threat to the US and its interests. We need a long-term strategy to target this and other threats to our interests and security. Politics should be left out of this decision, as the focus must be on protecting the country.
