I think Brene Browns work is outstanding. I have mixed reactions to her takeaways and conclusions, though. I think thats because, as she self-describes, her research dragged her kicking and screaming to recognize the nature and importance of vulnerability. Her conclusions about things like vulnerability, the difference between empathy and sympathy, etc., sound somewhat like views from the outside in. So I admire her for being honest and humble enough to adjust herself to align with her research, rather than what so many do: adjust their research so that it aligns with their egos or the egos of their funding sources. A few nuggets: Culture of scarcity Scarcity: never ____ enough -- good enough, safe enough, certain enough, perfect enough, relevant enough, extraordinary enough. Somehow, in the world we live in today, an ordinary life has become synonymous with a meaningless life. We can only love and be loved as much as we are willing to have our heart broken. Heres what we know from the research: blame is simply the discharging of discomfort and pain. It has an inverse relationship with accountability. Meaning: people who blame a lot seldom have the tenacity and grit to hold people accountable... Accountability by definition is a vulnerable process. I think her take on sympathy is a glass half full view that overlooks the full half, but I agree with her about the glass half empty version. Make sure you catch the interview at the end. The question the host framed about the difference/similarity between shame and guilt (posed solely in behavioral terms) and her answer (reframed into motivational terms) was stellar. https://youtube/watch?v=sXSjc-pbXk4
