I think Im losing ground on my 15 1/2 year old girl, and Im wondering if anyone with geriatric alpacas can offer some advise. This female (who I do not use to breed) started losing weight and developing very loose stools a couple of years ago, so I had my vet out to examine her. She had clear fecals, but not much in the way of molars in the back, so we put her on Purina Equine Senior to help her gain some weight. Weve spent the last year and a half doing pretty well--she cant chew hay but kind of gums it, and with her Senior we managed to maintain her weight and only had sporadic diarrhea. A couple of months ago she decided she didnt want the senior any more, so shes been tinkering with Grow and Repro and Calf Manna, but has lost interest in eating those. She is now looking almost emaciated. I found another senior product with lots of molasses, which she will eat, but it seems to be creating more, and worse diarrhea. I never see her chew a cud anymore and today she didnt want to eat at all and has been laying around a lot. How do you properly feed an alpaca with no molars? Is there a pelleted hay product that might work? That shell eat? Any other ideas or success stories with these older alpacas would be so appreciated. I just feel like her digestive system is a mess.
