I think Paul Waldman is spot on here re: the dynamics within the Democratic Party today and going forward. Despite progressive disappointment on a few issues, there is no real revolt brewing on the Dem side before 2016 and Hillary Clinton. Republicans are in the same circular firing squad mode theyve been in since losing Congress in 2006. Common hatred of Obama hasnt rallied them in favor one particular agenda or leader. The internecine battle on the Right has resulted in party that is smaller than ever among the electorate, but whose core is more committed to sticking to principles than ever too. Given the Senate map and gerrymandering, the Republicans will likely have their last respectable election in 2014. After that, multicultural demographic growth, increasing social liberalism (on most issues), a dying Silent Generation, and a Republican Party strong in its rural base areas but weak in the growing places that matter will position the Democratic Party for strength over the long haul. Unless, of course, something new comes along to shake things up. And that usually happens too...
