I think a lot of why my fathers music has so much appeal with todays musicians is to do with the idea that everythings already been played. Even when The Beatles first started they were doing Little Richard and Chuck Berry covers. Its all been done. Something that my dad mentioned to me was that he was really into the playing the notes that other people didnt. Not playing the fastest or the best. Everything he played had melody. Someone said to me, Its hard to cover a Beatles song because its hard to improve on the solos. When youre dealing with one of my fathers songs, they were these perfectly crafted little melodies that couldnt really be changed. I think he really thought about everything. My dad didnt really think he was a very good guitar player. He thought he was good at making records. His skill lay in that simplicity of picking the notes that were in the chord but werent featured in the song and then making that into the guitar melody. A lot of the time they were stronger than the vocal lines. Now that people are starting to run out of notes, maybe thats why theres been a resurgence in the enjoyment of his music. Maybe thats why, even though hes not here, I see more people appreciating his music. I think music is being forced into a corner. Our generation, theres so much crossover and so much more influence from, say, Indian or world music. The world is becoming a smaller place. I think some of his influences that may have been a bit more far-out for people before are now more available; people, whether its subconsciously or not, have been influenced by more of the same things he was. I grew up listening to a lot of Hendrix, Clapton, Zeppeling, AC/DC and stuff, and so I have a different style of guitar playing to my father. I didnt really learn to play from my dad, I learned to play with my dad. He never really taught me anything but the 12-bar and the fundamental chords; we just played a lot together. But I find that now, in the strengths I have in my guitar playing, its the same thing - not playing too much and just more of a feel. I just find this all very interesting because people often mention George as being influential purely as a result of being the guitar player for The Beatles and performing on the Ed Sullivan Show, but Ive recently noticed that while he may not be seen as a guitar hero as such, his style of playing has been a major influence for many alternative rock bands. Dhani in Filter 2011 George sings stick around Jack ~ it always amused him that Frank Sinatra used to sing it like that https://youtube/watch?v=qwn0qY2qY_s
