I think a more accurate version of Its a Wonderful Life would have gone like this. Even though Uncle Billy lost the money, and Mr. Potter conspired against George, the townspeople and his family would have blamed George 100%. Rather than rally around him, all of them, including his family would probably desert him and pillage whatever assets George Bailey had left. Nobody would remember any of the good deeds Bailey did because, seriously, what have you done for me lately George Bailey? His wife Marry, still being attractive and Donna Reed after all, would quickly find a new rich guy to support her, while telling her children and family how much of a horrible failure George was. Meanwhile, George would drown his sorrows in cheap booze and cheaper women. He would immerse himself in the local jazz culture and develop a nasty heroin addiction. Then one day, after a particularly bad bender, he would wake up and realize, damn it, Im George Motherf*@king Bailey! I built this town! And then hed clean himself up, quickly rebuild and bring retribution upon his enemies and turn his back on those who betrayed him. He would rescue his kids, because Marry has now left the rich guy for a dirt bag played by Robert Mitchum in order to be true to herself, and move his family to a mansion in Malibu. The angel who gets its wings would be a Victorias Secret angel who brings George a freshly prepared Martini as he surveys his empire in the films final shot. Not very good for Christmas, but I suspect, much more accurate.
