I think a politician is set up for failure from the outset of his/her throwing her/his hat in the ring. Those who support him/her expect total alliance with their agenda; those who oppose expect total abdication of responsible action. In order to get elected a politician has to garner enough support to get elected--regardless of his/her personal views. And 2/3 of the public has judged him/her as sleazy, immoral, self-serving, criminal--the instant s/he takes office. In addition, the public generally supposes that s/he is dirty and fair game for any kind of public slaughter in the media because of his/her willingness to enter the ring. How do we get good, responsible, sincere, honest people to lead us in public office (the foundation of a democratic government) if we tell them our first response will be to humiliate, objectify, lie about them? And then, with that as our intentions, dont we set ourselves up for failure? Dont we force our political leaders to become exactly what we say we dont want them to be?
