I think great film like great theatre can be immediate and relevant. Here are the most immediate films I saw last year. Not always the best(though many of them are), of what I saw last year. Birdman Whiplash We Are The Best Under the Skin Why Dont You Play in Hell Neighbors/The Interview - while 22 Jump Street had me laughing often, nothing was as childishly confident as these two Seth Rogen films. And while not great movies, they had me laughing from beginning to end. Jodorowskys Dune Guardians of the Galaxy Grand Budapest Hotel The Lego Movie Edge of Tomorrow Big Hero 6 How to Train Your Dragon 2 The Raid 2 Calvary Ones that came really close: The Rover, Interstellar, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Imitation Game, The Homesman, Space Station 76, The Hobbit Ones that thought they did, but alas: Lucy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tammy, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Two Lovers Left Alive Ones I still need to see: Foxcatcher, American Sniper, Inherent Vice. Nightcrawler, Fury, Boyhood, Big Eyes, The Trip to Italy, Life Itself, I may update as I remember other films.
