I think its important to remember the relevance and significance of ceremony and tradition. The flower is a symbol of remembrance...it also signifies peace and love. There are those who are now suggesting that the money spent on cartloads of flowers, set down in Martin Place to pay respect to the victims of the siege, should have been used differently. I dont know of any better way to demonstrate empathy and anguish and support, than to create this enormous carpet of flowers. And it does cost money, and it is transient...but it is also a declaration of unity and kinship. And it is so beautiful.
