I think most Australians would find this shocking. It really is testing the boundaries of democracy. -- Professor Paul Williams At 9pm last night the Newman Government sacked the entire committee charged with overseeing the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) after the committee questioned the head of the CMC, Dr Ken Levy and the head of the Premier’s Media Unit over their dealings in relation to the government new bikie laws. Once again, as soon as the Newman government gets questioned in the public domain, this time via the Parliamentary Crime & Misconduct Committee, they move to shut down the entire debate, whether it be unions, community groups, judges or fellow parliamentarians, their only tactic is to silence critics who dare to ask questions. Sign the petition to reinstate Independent Liz Cunningham as Chair Liz Cunningham, Independent member for Gladstone has long been a voice for integrity and has never shied away from asking the tough questions of politicians, and people in positions of power. She is no Labor stooge having supported the LNP minority government from 1996-1998. Now, the government has removed her and the entire committee as it was asking questions of the head of the CMC. The Parliamentary CMC committee has long been bipartisan and not controlled by government MPs, a tradition the LNP has now trashed with its replacements meaning a government majority. More and more Queenslanders are asking, how many more power grabs will Campbell Newman and his government make? How much further will they go to trash the legacy and the important lessons of the Fitzgerald Inquiry? Tell them that enough is enough, and that oversight of one of Queensland’s most important bodies should be kept fair and independent not subject to Campbell Newman’s political whims. Sign the petition today. Thank you for continuing to step up, to tell Campbell Newman that he doesn’t speak for me and that a healthy democracy means healthy debate. Regards, Alex Scott and the Working For Queenslanders team.
