I think most of us assume that cranking up the level of our spiritual life would mean getting louder about it. We think making it bigger and more obvious is the same thing as making it better. So, in our minds, the people who wear t-shirts about Jesus and have that fish on their car seem to be the ones really doing this thing. What we want to do is make it look as good as possible so that it seems to come off as the real thing. The only problem with this idea is that it has nothing to do with what God really wants from us. What if God doesn’t want you to get louder? What if God isn’t looking for more conspicuous followers? What if God isn’t a bit concerned with how Christian something appears to be? What if God would rather you not put that bumper sticker on the car because it confuses the issue and invites misunderstanding? What if God wants you to be quieter about your walk with Him? What if He doesn’t want you parading your faith like a flag you’re waving on a battle line? What if God wants you to keep a secret? There’s an entire chapter of the Scriptures where Jesus tells us plainly over and over again that God wants a relationship with you that’s largely a secret. He doesn’t want you to show off when it comes to your spiritual life. He doesn’t want you ministering to people in a way that gives you all the credit for being awesome. God wants you to be like an undercover agent of the spiritual world. He wants you to be involved in covert operations of love that you never get credit for. Why? Well, there are probably tons of answers to that question, but part of it has to be the fact that this relationship God wants with you is intimate and very personal to God. He wants to have something cool and special with you alone and He doesn’t want to invite a lot of people into it. When you serve Jesus in secret, you show the invisible God that you believe He’s there and that He rewards those who love Him. You can’t keep an oven hot if you’re always opening the door. Keep your relationship with God growing in secret. Give Him your best when no one else is looking. Let God get all the credit for your acts of service and love. He’s watching. He loves it and He promises He’ll never forget it.
