I think most of us here are writers or wannabes (like yours truly). This is space opera, but, of course, it applies to any fiction. So. Lets have a skin-deep discussion on an uncomfortable subject. Race. As a newb, it occurs to me that every time I go to paint a picture for the reader regarding the first appearance of a character, regardless of what their tone or melanin count is, there doesnt seem to be any good way of doing it without sounding like youre either a) pandering, b) a closet racist, or c) both. How do you handle d) none of the above? For the record, I have a number of people of different colors in my WIP. Not because I feel the burning need to appease the PC gods, but because those characters either told me thats who they are or Im basing them on actual people I know. So...how do you do it? For the record...Im not talking about culture, mannerisms, speech patterns, or anything of that nature. Im talking specifically about appearance and how a character is first described.
