I think most people understand that it would be wrong to walk into Barnes & Noble, purchase a copy of a book-any book- go home, photo copy the pages one by one by one, then staple them together and hand them off to a friend. We know its wrong. Its stealing. So why do people think that doing it digitally is acceptable? Its the exact same crime, just easier to commit. Likewise, you dont walk into Starbucks, order your favorite drink, and proceed to drink it all, then hand the empty cup back to the clerk and tell her you didnt want it after all and demand a refund. Again, that would be wrong. Yet people do it with digital books all the damn time. Sure, you might try a new drink, and not like it. So you ask for an exchange after one sip and as good customer service, the clerk will probably do it. But if you walk in tomorrow, and ask for the same drink you didnt like, I bet that clerk will tell you to get lost. I get it. People try new things, and dont like it. People mess up, and put in an erroneous order. Refunds in those cases are perfectly acceptable. But purchasing EVERY book in a series, then returning them one by one isnt accidental or acceptable. Its stealing. And I cant freaking believe that I have to say this last one, but apparently I do. Changing character names and posting a book as fanfiction, claiming you wrote it, is stealing. Not only are you stealing from the actual author, youre betraying the trust of the fan fiction community. Double shame on you. (< This last one didnt happen to me, but to a dear friend of mine. If you want to show support, go over to Alexia Purdy s page and show her some love. ) And with that, Im taking an unplanned day off before I strangle someone.
