I think one of the hardest things to overcome is the feeling of total inertia; when our fear from childhood becomes so overwhelming that we shut down becoming incapable of doing anything when what we really need to do is fight the inertia, release our feelings and move forward. This often occurs when something has happened that has made us feel unsafe and as a result we are feeling frightened. When this happens we easily protect ourselves by feeling nothing and just want to hide and disappear. But in my experience giving into this feeling of inertia only makes us feel much worse. What do any of you do when that state of mind envelops you? Do you get out and go for a walk or get some exercise? Do you release your feelings in some constructive way? Do you even recognize what is happening? I’ve We close down to stop ourselves feeling so the best option I find is to yell out or write down or express my feelings loudly and boldly and try to take several deep breaths to really let go of the fear. This is really hard to do because fear is scary, but may I encourage you to try, or even better to recognize what caused the fear, or what the trigger was. This will help you to avoid the trigger in the future or perhaps even give you something to work on with your therapist. - Liz
