I think running from a bear is unintentionally provoking a bear. Bears are like cops. Dont run from the bears. - Shane Eric Sanders As it stands, DEP Senior Wildlife Biologist Kelcey Burguess said the Division of Fish and Wildlife is unsure if the bear found approximately 30 to 40 yards from Patels body was the animal that left claw and bite marks on his body or if the apparent encounter was the cause of Patels death. Still, Burguess said he was pretty positive - as were the police officers on scene. According to DEP representatives, the bear was untagged and not previously encountered by the DEP. Consequently, it was without a history of aggressive behavior. Burguess said that certainly does not rule out the possibility that the bear was aggressive in nature, however. It could have also been diseased or hungry - a mass food shortage has been reported. DEP spokesman Larry Ragonese said that people who live in North Jersey generally know the rules: Dont approach bears. Dont look bears in the eye. Dont corner bears. Dont feed bears. Dont run from bears. northjersey/news/apparent-death-by-black-bear-in-west-milford-has-officials-stressing-prudence-rarity-of-attack-1.1093923
