I think that America is gradually moving more and more towards libertarian principles, while this process will not be completed by the next election, I do see baby steps being taken in that direction. Young people are tired of endless war, seeing their friends sent off to the giant sandbox (Middle East) to manage the pieces on a global chessboard, and worst case scenario coming home in a flag draped coffin, or "best" case scenario coming home with emotional trauma of war. Additionally they are tired of the government interfering "in the bedroom" (euphemistically speaking), regulating what they can or cannot put into their own bodies, and regulating the hell out of their lives. Plus, they believe in hard work paying off and being able to fly as high as their wings can take them without having some charismatic benevolent preening politician redistributing the fruits of their labor to their cronies in an effort to buy votes. The sooner the GOP recognizes this and drops the moral busy body politics, drops the trying to be all things to all people, and starts adopting a more live and let live method of governing, the better otherwise they will go the way of the whigs and who knows how long before the third party that would rise up will actually be able to get elected to the big offices of power.
