I think that I am very lucky to have the parents I did. I have taken 3 phone separate calls today from people whos partners have been diagnosed with treatable cancer. They are due to have treatment and a course of chemo just in case. These people have to get rid of their animals NOW!!!TODAY!!!THIS ABSOLUTE MINUTE!!! Otherwise they will march those animals up to their vets and kill them. My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer when I was 8 years old and he lost the battle when I was 13 years old. At the time we had 4 dogs and 6 cats. He had private care because of his job before he retired. The doctors told him that he must get rid of the pets. He said no because having the pets or not having the pets would make no difference to the outcome. My mum was diagnosed with cancer 9 years ago (treatable). She had the cancer removed and went on a course of chemo. The doctors told her that she must get rid of all the pets. She said no and that it was not even an option and that they had less germs than the hospital she had been treated in. No animals had to be chucked out or killed because cancer had reared its ugly head. We just carried on. We did not whine to people that we had no time to feed them. We did not pretend that keeping these animals clean and healthy was any big issue because it wasnt. Cancer when it strikes is sad and terrifying news, but it will never mean me losing or killing my extended family, even if I lost my blood relative through this terrible disease.
