I think that many probably look at self control as a singularly faceted idea, when it is actually multi faceted. I think that self control consists of controlling what each individual sense is exposed to- what we take in, listen to, smell, feel. It is also governing the tongue, and the body- all of which are hard to focus on all at once. Yet the senses are the gateways to what goes on internally. Controlling these senses is therefore a key to happiness- it is not a pathway to restriction and abstinence, as it is often characterized as, but to freedom.
